Everything from Peru
Peru, in western South America, features diverse landscapes from the arid Pacific coast to the Andes mountains and the Amazon rain forest. Its population is approximately 34 million. The capital, Lima, is a large metropolis on the coast. Peru was the heartland of the Inca Empire and later a major source of Spanish colonial wealth. It gained independence in the 1820s.
Today, it is a presidential republic with a rapidly growing economy driven by mining (copper, gold), agriculture, and tourism. Visitors are drawn to its rich archaeological sites, most notably the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu. Peru is also famous for its diverse cuisine, which blends indigenous and immigrant influences, and its vibrant Andean cultural traditions.
Peru is a country in the region Sandalsand has defined as South America. There are introductions to this region and other regions in the Destinations menu.
