Everything from Namibia

Namibia is a sparsely populated country in southwestern Africa, known for its vast desert landscapes, including the Namib Desert along the Atlantic coast. It has a population of about 2.5 million. The capital is Windhoek. Namibia was a German colony until after WWI, when it came under South African administration, achieving independence only in 1990. Its history includes the devastating genocide of the Herero and Nama peoples by German colonisers.

Today, it is a stable multi-party democracy. The economy is centred on mining (diamonds, uranium), agriculture, and tourism. Namibia is famous for its wildlife, including free-roaming desert-adapted elephants and rhinos in Etosha National Park, and for some of the world’s highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei.

Namibia is a country in the region Sandalsand has defined as the Middle East and Africa. There are introductions to this region and other regions in the Destinations menu.
