Morocco is a North African kingdom with coastlines on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is characterized by the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, and a rich cultural blend of Arab, Berber, and European influences. The population is around 37 million. The capital is Rabat, but the largest city is Casablanca. Morocco’s history includes powerful Berber dynasties and it was the seat of the Almoravid and Almohad Caliphates. A former French and Spanish protectorate, it gained independence in 1956.
