Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe, situated in the Carpathian Basin. Its landscape is dominated by the Great Hungarian Plain and the Danube River, which bisects the capital, Budapest. With a population of about 9.6 million, Hungary has a unique language and culture distinct from its neighbours. Founded in the late 9th century, it was a major European power for centuries before becoming part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The 20th century brought the trauma of World War I, the short-lived Hungarian Revolution of 1956. After 1989 the country changed from communism to a market economy. A member of the EU and NATO, modern Hungary is known for its thermal spas, vibrant folk traditions, and a economy focused on automobile manufacturing and tourism.
