Everything from North Macedonia
North Macedonia is a landlocked country in the Balkan Peninsula, characterised by mountainous terrain, valleys, and lakes. It has a population of around 1.8 million. The capital and largest city is Skopje. Historically, the region was part of ancient Macedon and later the Roman and Ottoman empires. It was the southernmost republic of Yugoslavia before gaining peaceful independence in 1991.
A long-standing dispute with Greece over the name “Macedonia” was resolved in 2018 with the addition of “North.” It is a candidate for EU membership. The economy relies on metallurgy, agriculture, and a growing tourism sector attracted to Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest lakes, and its blend of Orthodox and Ottoman heritage.
North Macedonia is a country in the region Sandalsand has defined as Southern Europe. There are introductions to this region and other regions in the Destinations menu.
