Belgium, located in Western Europe, borders France, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, and the North Sea. Its population is around 11.7 million, and the capital Brussels also serves as the de facto capital of the European Union and headquarters of NATO. Belgium is divided into Dutch-speaking Flanders, French-speaking Wallonia, and bilingual Brussels, reflecting its cultural and linguistic diversity.
Historically, Belgium was a battleground of European powers and became independent in 1830. It was occupied during both World Wars but has since developed into a prosperous federal monarchy and EU founding member.
Belgium is famous for medieval towns, Gothic cathedrals, and culinary specialties such as chocolate, waffles, and beer. Economically, it has a strong industrial and services sector. Belgium’s cultural richness, political importance, and historic landmarks like Bruges and Ghent make it a key destination in Europe’s cultural and political landscape.
