South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. It is a highly mountainous country with a population of about 51 million. The capital, Seoul, is a massive metropolis known for its modern technology and historic palaces. Following the Korean War (1950-1953), South Korea emerged from poverty to become a global economic powerhouse in a period known as the “Miracle on the Han River.”

It is a leader in technology (Samsung, Hyundai), and a major exporter of electronics and automobiles. The country is also famous for its influential pop culture, known as the “Korean Wave” or Hallyu, which includes K-pop, cinema, and television dramas. South Korea is a vibrant democracy with a high standard of living.
