Everything from Iceland

Iceland, a Nordic island nation in the North Atlantic, is a land of extreme geological contrasts with vast glaciers, active volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs. It has a small population of around 370,000. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital. Settled by Norse and Celtic migrants in the 9th century, Iceland is home to the ancient Viking sagas. It gained independence from Denmark in 1944.

Today, it is one of the world’s most developed countries, powered almost entirely by renewable geothermal and hydroelectric energy. Iceland boasts a strong literary tradition, an egalitarian society, and an economy built on tourism, fishing, and aluminum smelting. Its dramatic, otherworldly landscapes make it a unique destination.

Iceland is a country in the region Sandalsand has defined as North and Central Europe. There are introductions to this region and other regions in the Destinations menu.
